The photographic work ORIGIN OF LIGHT consists of a large-format transparency (100 cm x 560 cm) depicting 23 altar candles—without their wicks—arranged on black velvet. A custom-made suspension system mounts the transparency approximately 15 cm away from the wall. Twenty-three fluorescent tubes are installed behind it, positioned so that each candle is illuminated by a corresponding tube. Thanks to the use of a special transparency material (Dura Clear), the light sources and their wiring remain visible only when the lights are on. They are connected to a motion sensor; the lights activate—illuminating the transparency—for 30 seconds only when triggered by the movement of exhibition visitors.
The energy required for the light sources is supplied by solar panels mounted on the window wall opposite the installation. Behind the screen, twenty-three fluorescent tubes are attached, so that every candle is lit by a fluorescent tube. The particular property of the Dura-Clear slide material allows the sources of the light to be discernible, along with the cable system, only when the light has been switched on. The lights are connected to a motion detector, so that it is only the visitors’ movements that turn the light on and illuminate the slide, for thirty seconds a time. The energy required for the light sources is supplied by solar cells attached to the window wall facing the installation. Supported by Osram. The installation was shown also in 2002 during the solo exhibition Sabine Kacunko – Origin of Light at the Gallery 44 in Barcelona (2002).
