The video centers on an excursion to Africa. For the artist, this journey into the land where humanity has its geographical origins became an “incursion”—an attempt to penetrate the ”relics of the primordial” found there: A camera movement along a narrow footpath, her “entry” (or, incursion) into a Zulu hut (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) and a glimpse of its occupant, a pan to the campfire (a symbol of civilization) and, within that shot, an inset view of the outdoors: the natural landscape featuring the “staffage figure” of an elephant and—surprising and visible for only a moment—a Black man dressed in a bright red suit… A potential history of nature is woven into a human frame of reference and interpreted from the artist’s subjective perspective.
